I’m Joshua, the creator of Milestone Play.

As the opening page says, I am a storyteller, game master, and circus/flow arts practitioner. Above all, I am a Facilitator of Play. So much of what I do can be mistaken as performance but it’s not. Well, there are certainly elements of performance but that is not my purpose or goal. The arts and activities I pursue are things that anyone can do if only they are given the opportunity to. I enjoy making those activities available to everyone by lowering the barriers to entry, correcting misunderstandings, and welcoming others to play with me. What little busking experience I have isn’t even true busking where I wow people with skill and entertainment… I just get out all of my skill-toys and juggling props and encourage people to join me.

I grew up going to renaissance fairs, playing RPGs (both tabletop and LARPing in elementary school), and really filling out the concept of nerd. I began to collect the different skills I saw being performed at the fairs and went from simply playing the games to throwing a coup to take over a gaming table in high school. I continued to introduce people to D&D in college and on more than one occasion had players telling me that I was really good at what I did even if I didn’t think so.

I graduated college with a degree in Biology, minor Anthropology, and through an Honors College that essentially functioned as a Liberal Arts minor as well. I would go on to work in the zookeeping field for a handful of years as had been my plan. While not prominent, all of this undertones my games in how how animals, environments, and cultures are used to expand narrative instead of acting as skins for hostile encounters.

Milestone Play originated in 2019 as a side project to gather all of my hobbies under a single roof. I volunteered to run an RPG night at a local library and helped out at a renaissance fair where I earned a smidge of busking money. I didn’t wholly consider pursuing Milestone Play as a business until the the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to look at my current position. Entering into 2021, I put a bottom line cutoff on my bank account to pursue this and I have been doing it ever since.
